Akron's Rotary Youth Exchange Program is active this 2013 - 2014 school year with Outbound student, Sydney Heersink (senior at Firestone High School) who has arrived in Valence, France, and Inbound student Gu Hyoun Nam from South Korea who is already attending classes at Firestone High School. Both were able to meet and attend an Akron Rotary meeting before Sydney's departure.

ImageAs Rotarians, we are proud and excited to be able to support this exchange.  It gives us a chance to get acquainted with young people from other cultures and provides an opportunity to learn more about the two communities, their Rotary clubs and communities.   Gy Hyoun says he loves his host family, Bill and Suzanne Manby and their three children, and so far he is happy with his classes at Firestone.  Studying all content areas in English can be challenging, but he seems ready for the challenge.

ImageSo far he has been to an Indians baseball game (thanks, Stu!) and an American football game (his American brother plays!).  After visiting the University of Akron's campus, he sports a Zips t-shirt, and has a greater sense of what an American university is like.  He has also enjoyed a number of other American traditions, such as eating ice cream cones on a hot September day.  During the Ohio-Erie Youth Exchange orientation, he met several fellow Inbounders, went kayaking in Rex Lake, and had a generally great time.  We are waiting patiently to hear from Sydney about her experience to date.
