Earlier this year one of Akron Rotary’s own, 1ST Lt. Kevin McGee, was deployed to Kuwait with the Ohio Army National Guard’s 371st Sustainment Brigade.  An element of the brigade is operating out of a U.S.  Air Base in Manas, Kyrgyzstan.  There are two orphanages near Manas that have major needs.  Working through Kevin and an Air Force organization known as Manas Area Benefit Outreach Society, the Akron Rotary is partnering with the 371st Soldiers to provide much needed supplies to the two orphanages in an impoverished area near Manas, Kyrgyzstan.

Kevin has defined the project goal as providing an opportunity for Rotarians to engage in a project which puts service above self and allows deployed Soldiers to build resilience by engaging in selfless service. Operation Deployed For Good – Manas, will create an opportunity for the deployed soldiers to maintain a connection with communities back home and where they currently serve.

Akron Rotary is currently collecting the following items which represent the greatest need for these children:

  • School supplies (notebooks, pens, pencils, markers, erasers, sidewalk chalk, rulers, etc.)
  • Toys for elementary school kids
  • Art supplies
  • Bath and hand towels
  • Clothes for children ages 6 to 18 which are new, or lightly used but clean (excluding underclothes).  Temperatures range from 0 to 100° Fahrenheit so there is a need for both a lightweight and winter wear.
  • Cash donations will also be appreciated.  They will be used to purchase the much needed supplies for the children.

Donations will be accepted at the weekly meetings through October 8th. They will also be accepted at the Rotary camp until October 14th.  Everything will be consolidated at the camp, listed and packed for shipment October 15.

By successfully completing this project, we demonstrate our support for Kevin and his military colleagues.
