Club President's Message

Tis the season for setting up your 2017 for success.

This is the time year when we’re all rushing around trying to get our Holiday shopping done, squeeze in all of those Holiday lunch/dinner parties and if you’re like me make it to all of your kids Christmas performances.

This is also a great time of year to evaluate where we are in life and to take a good hard holistic view of things. Whether it be family, business, health, faith and even our time spent in service. I recently read an article by Jim Rohn where he gives a four simple but powerful tips for goal setting that we can not only apply to our lives but also to our service in Rotary.
  1. Evaluate and reflect: When settings goals it’s great to have a finish line but it’s imperative that we also have a realistic view of our starting line. Let me ask, is there something that you wanted to do in Rotary this year that you just didn’t do?  Did you want to help on a specific committee and never reached out to that chair? Or did you just want to make it to a few more of the weekly lunches?
  2. Define your dreams and goals. In the world, we live in today we have so much that can take us off track and get our focus away from what our goals really are. For this reason, its imperative that we paint a clear picture of what success looks like for us.
  3. Make your goals S.M.A.R.T.
    1. Specific: “If you aim at nothing, you’ll hit it every time.” Zig Ziglar
    2. Measurable: If you can’t measure your goal you can’t manage your goal, have specific measurables
    3. Attainable: One of the ways people set themselves up for failure is by simply setting goals that are too high.
    4. Realistic: Goals must be realistically attainable. As much as I would love to have played football in the NFL I realize that is simply not realistic given my physical size and abilities.
    5. Time: Great goals sound also have a specific time frame with an end date.
  4. Have accountability. I have found I’m willing to let myself down but the thought of letting someone else down is usually enough to keep me focused and on task towards reaching my goals. Let a someone know what your goals are for this coming year whether it’s a spouse or fellow Rotarian let’s hold each other accountable so that we can reach the true potential we were created to achieve.
Lastly, I would add this to the tips Jim gave in his article. Look at the everyday small decisions you’re making that are forming your habits. “Sow a thought and you reap an action; sow an act and you reap a habit; sow a habit and you reap a character; sow a character and you reap a destiny.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

It is my hope that everyone can enjoy time with their family and friends this Holiday Season. Remember the reason for Christmas!

Though Atlanta has seen its share of violence and inequity over time, today it brims with reminders that there is another way. Get inspired while you’re visiting for the 2017 Rotary International Convention from 10 to 14 June. Take a short walk from the convention center to the Center for Civil and Human Rights. There, you can see the handwritten notes, speeches, and sermons of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., experience an interactive 1960s-era lunch counter “sit-in,” and learn more about persecuted groups all over the world. A streetcar will take you to the Martin Luther King Jr...
