Today is July 4th and hard to believe I am sitting here writing my first article for the Rotary Club of Akron newsletter.  We are already half way through 2010, but are just beginning of 2010-2011 Rotary year.  We have a great ride ahead of us andI'm excited to help lead our club with all of my team members and welcome some great advice from past leaders.  It is truly an honor to also have Stew Buchanan as our District Governor.

On July 1, our club held a wonderful going way/induction celebration for our immediate past president Dan O'Connell, myself, and Stew at the Women's City Club.  The evening was filled with fun and friendship, just the way a Rotary event should be.  It was easy to see the great respect and care for everyone in the room, a true family event.  Dick Farkas was fantastic as our evening MC and roaster, leading all of us in some good laughs.  We even had a special visit from the Lord (who sounded a lot like Steve Shechter??)

On July 13, I will present at our weekly luncheon some of my ideas and vision for the upcoming year.   I readily invite everyone to offer suggestions on how we can all work together to grow our club, both in membership and current knowledge of each other.  I used the term family above, and I feel we need to learn more about each other and all of the special talents we have.  Sometimes if I just have an unexpected conversation with another member I realize how much I really don't know about them and interesting they are.  We talk of friendship in our four way test and this is one area I'd like to strengthen in our club.  And of course, I look forward to fun ways to help us in this endeavor!

On July 9, the 2nd annual District 6630 Christmas in July will be happening up in Cleveland at the Tall Ships Festival. Mike and I will be attending and we are really looking forward to meeting some new friends, visiting with the old, and just having a grand time!  I hope to see more of our Akron Club members also and if you haven't already, please visit the website and sign up this week.  Our club commitment at this event and participation in the Silent Auction will help benefit our foundation goals.

We have a fun summer ahead of us as we start the Camp dinners and Poker Run event planning.  These will get their well deserved attention and promotion as the weeks move on.

I hope all of you had a safe and happy July 4th holiday weekend!

Yours in Rotary,

Janet Williams
