Akron Fire Chief Clarence Tucker is such an amazing individual with a long history of service to our community. He shared with us a bit of history about how fire fighters were once required to have long beards - they had to dunk them in water and put them over their mouths to breath since masks for this purpose were not yet invented! Did you know that in 1902 Akron, Ohio was the first city in the country to receive a motorized fire truck? NY City was second.
The Chief leads 353 fire fighters across 13 stations. They respond to over 40,000 fire and EMS calls each year with approximately 80% of those being EMS related. Akron fire fighters have become highly specialized and respond to catastrophes across the country. Sadly last week there were 27 local responses just for Opioid overdoses - and that was a smaller number than normal!
He made a point to say "thank you" to the citizens of Akron for voting yes on the levy. The funding has allowed them to get much needed equipment and make building repairs. They now have new thermal imagers on each truck and each fire fighter has a second set of fire gear.
Cancer is the number one cause of death for these heros. Carcinogens get in/on the suits and are absorbed by the skin of the fire fighters . . . having the second suit now provides the opportunity to wash the gear between uses, helping to reduce the carcinogens.
Remember to check the batteries in your smoke detectors - a good time to do it is when our clocks change in the Spring and Fall. Thanks to an arrangement with the Red Cross - Akron has now placed more smoke detectors in homes than any other chapter! A huge thank you goes out to Chief Tucker and his team for their service to our community!
Remember to register for the Club Holiday Party which will be December 18th. This is not our normal meeting so RSVPs are required. The cost for this event is $30 per person (this is not included with the meal deal). Click here to RSVP.
Keep bringing those guests to our meeting! This week we welcomed Chris Richardson and also our Exchange Student, Sotaro Kamasaki.
On February 2, 2019 over 500 golfers, Rotarians and volunteers will come together to golf, win prizes, and celebrate the great work that Rotary is doing in our local community.
We would appreciate any donation of an item that can be used for a door prize raffle to make it a fun event for. Anything from a $5 gift card, coffee mug, small baskets of goodies, candy, etc. Use your imagination!!
Bring it to the Tuesday or drop it off at the Camp office!
The 2019 Chili Open silent auction will feature a Wheelbarrow of Good Cheer! Please help us fill the wheelbarrow with any donation of unopened bottles of spirits and mixers, bar glassware, cocktail napkins, etc. Please bring your donation to a Tuesday Rotary Club luncheon. This will be a very desirable item to bid on during the auction, and the winning bidder gets to take home their new wheel barrel along with all of its contents. Thank you in advance for your donations to help make the Chili Open a continued success to benefit Akron Rotary Camp!

Currently, we have raised over $106,000, but still has a long way to go to reach our bold goal of $275,000.
Because of the Chili Open, no child is ever turned away from Akron Rotary Camp due to inability to pay. Since its inception, the event has raised over $3,250,000 to support families and children in attending Camp.
If you are considering a sponsorship, or know of someone that might be interested in helping a great cause, please reach out to our corporate sponsor co-chairs, Pat O’Neill or Jeff Sheeks, or Campership duo (co-chairs) Nathanael Billow or Andrew Grover. The ad deadline for the Chili Open Insert is set for January 4, 2019 and is approaching quickly.
Thank you for helping to “Create a world where there are only abilities!”
