VOCATIONS and MEMBERSHIP

October was vocational service month for Rotary International. As most of you know Rotary clubs are supposed to keep some balance in vocations of their membership. This doesn't mean we can't allow another lawyer or CPA in the Club. On the contrary, it merely means we ought to be aware of the Club's need for diversity in vocation or avocation. Do we have a medical doctor? Do we have a funeral director, a rubber company executive, a car dealer? You get the point. Being aware of this need can help us pinpoint potential members who want to serve.

On another note, if appropriate, members who are unemployed or underemployed should feel free to announce that fact to the Club. This was brought up in the District Governor's newsletter, and even a website link could be made available for resumes and forwarded to the District. Rotary is all about helping others, and what better way to help a Club member.
 
I just spoke to Dan Sveda about membership. He called me while driving back from vacation. That's dedication! He and the membership committee will be coming up with some ideas and packets to help us increase total membership with quality people. Don't hesitate to ask him or another club member if a person you had in mind sounds like someone you should ask.  If, however, you would like an invitation to a potential member be from me or another member of the club that can also be done.
          
I have some other thoughts that I would like to share that are also worth mentioning. The alternative meeting (now called the "after-hours" meeting) was a real success this month. Steve Schechter subsidized the cost at Crave restaurant and he and Bridget Garvin Ambrisco renamed the meeting "After Hours". I left and there was still some "after hours" people lingering over their wine glasses. Meetings like this and participating in Chili open planning are great ways to get to know our fellow Rotarians better and have some fun also. Chili open committee members have some new ideas this year, and I am happy to report that the group has grown in size. We look forward to a great event! Please keep an eye on the newsletter and website for upcoming events like Camp cleanup, the Christmas/holiday party and Salvation Army bell ringer signup.
 
A final thought on our speaker lineup is in order. Dominic Frisina has done a great job finding good speakers for us, and there is a healthcare theme from various perspectives being presented. Dom is always looking for interesting topics, so give him a call or email him with any ideas you may have.
