I feel like a broken record with the comment “where did the time go”.  We are all back from summer vacations, kids back in school and the start of a long Labor Day weekend greets us with our first fall like day.  The Akron Rotary Club ended summer with a very hot poker run and hopefully we have another beautiful day for our Camp Cookout on September 14.

Our club has had some very interesting speakers this summer but I have to admit our members can offer just as much.  One of our recent lunches we turned the focus on learning about each other.  We learned about a classic car owner, a comic book collector, and someone who likes to do formulas for fun!  If you don’t know who these people are, make sure to keep visiting at lunch or start coming again if you have been gone for awhile.  As we learned more about each other, the question was posed “what would you like to see our club accomplish?”  The two key wants were the success of the Capital Campaign and growing our membership.  I have no doubt both of these will happen with the perseverance and commitment our members can offer.

Membership is always a concern for any club.  Time is precious to all of us and there has to be a work, family and Rotary balance.  I recently met with some of our cluster club presidents and we are all looking for some unique ways to encourage new members to not only join, but be active with all projects.  We also want to collectively celebrate all of our members and are hoping to plan a multi club social event in December.  You will be hearing more about our ideas at future lunch meetings, but the idea is to have a NASA speaker come in at a nice evening venue.  This invite would extend to our families and really be a way to meet others beyond our club.

I also want to promote all of us putting Rotary out there in our every day lives.  Many members signed up for the promo packet for $10.  This includes our new glass mugs with our club name, a Rotary cling for our cars (or office windows/doors) and a four way test magnet.  I would love to make one up for all our members so continue to sign up!

September will also bring us our after hours meetings starting back up and we will start to promote our Akron Zoo outing in October.

I hope everyone has a great end to their summer and a blessed beginning to the fall!

Yours in Rotary,

Janet
