Rotary Youth Committee Scholarships

The Rotary Youth Committee chooses and recognizes the high school Students of the Year in the categories of Business Education, Trade and Industrial Studies, Home Economics, Marketing, and Agriculture. The best students in each field from the Akron Public Schools are chosen by their counselors and then the top two from eight candidates are selected after interviewing with Rotarians on the committee. Each student selected receives a $200 scholarship paid by the Rotary Foundation. Eight to ten students are selected each year.

The Youth Committee also coordinates the recognition of the Outstanding Academic Students ($200 scholarships from the Foundation). Ten students are selected by their counselors and principals as the students most likely to continue their education. Students from the seven public high schools plus the three parochial schools (The Elms, St. Vincent's and Hoban) are selected.

The Outstanding Career Students, generally 20-25 students, ($100 scholarships from the Foundation) are selected by their counselors as the outstanding representatives in their particular field of study within the Akron System. The Rotary Youth committee recognizes these students for their work in the areas of Food Service Management,

Administrative Support, Early Childhood Education, Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning, Cosmetology, Drafting, Automotive Technology, Accounting, Dental Assisting, Engineering, Business, Computer Networking, Marketing, etc.

RYLA-Rotary Youth Leadership Awards
. Each year the youth committee selects four students (Juniors) from the Akron Public School who will be leaders in their Senior class. The students are sent to a five-day Leadership Camp at Hiram College in June ($375 per student) and share this experience with around 40 other students from the Rotary District. The students are taught leadership skills that will help them become more effective leaders in their schools. Most importantly, the experience helps the students develop a network of peers from other schools from which they can draw support and ideas in their Senior year.
